Makur Maker makes case for top spot in 2020

Houston, TX - Adidas Nations is one of the few remaining events left for the travel basketball season and one that is always loaded with talent stateside and abroad. The focus for me was 2019 and 2020, here are a few of the top performers this weekend.

2019 PG Ashton Hagans (Newton County) One of the few guards nationally that will guard 80-feet. He was been consistent all summer putting pressure on the defense and finding open teammates. Love his willingness to post and create on the block.

2020 CG RJ Hampton (Montverde Academy) Seen as a shooting guard, Hampton was called on to run team and he was solid in that role, when placed off the ball he was dangerous as a consistent scoring threat.

2019 SG Jalen Lecque (Christ School) Another player who was asked to play on the ball some but was at his best attacking and finishing over the bigs at the rim. His explosiveness is next level.

2020 SG Jaden Springer (Rocky River) The youngest and arguably the hardest working player on the floor in Houston. His non-stop motor creates scoring opportunities off steals, rebounds and his attacking nature. Solid shooter from mid-range.

2019 PG Cole Anthony (Molloy) He was tough getting into the paint where he can finish above and through contact. His jumper continues to improve allowing more forays to the basket for buckets.

2019 C Charles Bassey (St. Anthony) In todays game its not often that bigs understand what and who they are. Don't count Bassey in that category. He rebounds on both ends with a willingness that is refreshing to see.

Outside the U.S.A.

2020 PF Makur Maker (Melbourne, Australia) I first saw Maker at the UnderClassman All-American Game and came away impressed with his abilities, seeing him this weekend confirmed them. He rebounds at a high level, blocks shots, runs the floor, showed a jumper to 18-feet, can drive the ball and finish plays around the rim. He made a convincing case for the top player in 2020.

2018 SG Kody Stattmann (Cairns, OLD) This kid can flat shoot the ball. What I like even more was ability to create space with the dribble for his shot and move without the ball. He had crafty finishes when attacking the basket and has sleepy bounce. Has Arizona and Virginia among others in the recruiting hunt.

2018 C Michael Somutochukwu Uchendu (Brazil) Big, bruising rebounder. He set bone jarring screens, rebounded everything in his area and went outside for a few.
