Four Champions crowned

MARIETTA, GA - The 2nd Annual TOC Classic, held at Wheeler High School, provided some exciting basketball over the last four days and with that four champions were crowned.
Sophomore Jeremy Roach led a talented Paul VI team over Oak Ridge (FL) in the Apple Championship. Roach has done a great job of learning how to play and not falling prey to just being an athlete as he was tabbed in earlier years. He has developed a very reliable jumper, can create for himself and others and is a good defender. Roach wasn't alone as he was joined by Villanova commit and National Division MVP Brandon Slater in their championship run. Slater can guard multiple positions, showed a good mid-range game, deep ball and was good on offensive glass. Oak Ridge rode high flying, crowd pleasing, hard playing senior forward Emmitt Williams into the championship game before falling short. Williams showed his usual high energy, catching and finishing above the rim, beating the glass on both ends and protected the rim. With Williams patrolling the paint, senior wing Robin Perry had the perimeter covered. Perry, an all-tournament team selection, is a knock down spot shooter from deep and created the space for Williams to operate inside.

The third place game, featuring EJ Montgomery and Wheeler vs Holy Spirit and Anthony Edwards, had an exciting overtime finish with Edwards making the plays to seal the four point win. Edwards got out on break for the go ahead dunk, then got a steal and dunk for the closing.margin at the buzzer. Edwards showed patience on offense, never forcing the action while finishing with 17 points. The mental maturity is what most impressed me about his play this week. He went through stretches where he didn't get shots but he stayed mentally connected on defense and the glass putting Holy Spirit in position for the win. For Wheeler, Montgomery, finishing with a double-double, was pretty unstoppable in the paint with his jump-hook but Holy Spirit keyed on him throughout the fourth quarter and overtime which contributed to the win.

In the National Division Peach Championship, Pebblebrook used its full court pressure and tenacious defense on the way to the title. All-tournament performances by Canisius signee Mervin James and unsigned senior Josh Graham were the difference. James is a slashing, high energy forward that's willing to do the little things to win, while Graham opened things up with his jumper (4-4 from deep in championship) to create the space for those drives. Blanch Ely was led by unsigned senior point guard Michael Forrest. He is a heady guard, who defends well and has the ability to make shots off catch and dribble. `Grayson beat Miller Grove in the third place game with guard Nick Edwards exploding for 25 points, going 4-9 from deep. Charleston Southern signee Travis Anderson added 18 points in the 68-48 win. Maurice Harvey led Miller Grove with 16 points, Terrance Edwrads chipped in 13 points.
